For decades, the normally docile Indian community has suffered in silence on the lowest rung of Malaysian society. However, with this demonstration last year, they sent a clear message that they would no longer put up with it. Back on the scene, tens of thousands of ethnic Indians - long regarded as second-class citizens - have united to fight for their rights on the streets of normally sedate Kuala Lumpur. The protesters’ persistence, even under attack from water cannons, said a lot about their determination. Only when the police added stinging chemicals to the water were they able to stop the demonstration. Nevertheless, by then the central business district had been locked down for over six hours, and the protest’s organizers - the Hindu Rights Action Force or HINDRAF - had made their point, that the Indian community was sick of being officially treated as second-class citizens in their own country. Moreover, as David O’Shea reports, the surprising results in last month’s national elections mean Malaysia may never be the same again. OK, its time for me to write about the “Abolish ISA” forum that was organized by HINDRAF. The event mesmerized by germane presence of Mr. Syed Ibrahim who is the president of GMI, Human Rights lawyer Latifah Koya, Norlaila Othman who is the wife of ISA detainee Mat Sah Mohd Satrong, sister and mother of ISA detainee P. Uthayakumar and an ex-ISA detainee who is our new Penang CM Mr. Guan Eng. Their presence itself enthralled the evening. Among other VIP’s were our first Indian Penang DCM Prof. Ramasamy, Adun YB Raven and HINDRAF’s National Coordinator Mr. Thanindran. HINDRAF key person, Waythamoorthy’s wife also was there with us.

Olaichuvadi’s Sathis and myself were given the opportunity to handle the Multimedia section for this forum. The main purpose we got involved in this section is to get Waytha to perform a live webcam chat with the audience. We have been doing testing with Waytha for the past 1 week. Unfortunately, we could not get hold of him during the forum since his flight was delayed in Geneva.

The best part is, not a single press has come forward to publish the statement on their newspapers. Therefore, I have taken the risk to publish it in MakalVoice upon request. Is this the reward for a 16-year-old news publication company with around 100 employees that served the Indian Community with up-to-date news as it is? Indian Daily Makkal Osai can kena ban for doing their job?…what a world? According to PR-insight, the order to ban were instructed by Home Ministry’s chief Dato Syed Hamid Albar. He is a UMNO guyla! It purely sounds like a revenge of UMNO towards Ethnic Indian Community’s newspaper for not choosing their government on the election. If this is not the grounds than maybe, it could be for the reason that of publishing more news about opposition. Don’t Makkal Osai have the choice to publish what the people or rakyat are expecting? The UMNO guys doesn’t appear to keep their word. Don’t understand what I mean? Remember…after loosing 5 states to opposition and denying their 2/3 majority win, their leader Abdullah Ahmad Badawi mentioned that they will be more concerned and open about criticism. Is this the example? The UMNO led government is acting in a way as if they have not learned their lesson even after the worst trash about on the general election. How else you aspect me to say? A newspaper is supposed to publish news as it is, but UMNO seems not to like those who publish the news as it is. There is no value for human rights and democracy in this country. First HINDRAF leaders, now Makkal Osai and what next???
